The sculpture was based on the qualities of service to others and welcoming hospitality, which where elements identified by the parish committee as important to their community.

Coal mining in Iowa was a major industry and supported the energy needs of a growing state. The sculpture is a memorial to the Shuler coal mining community and pays tribute to the coal miners work and their families' sacrifices.
